Comune di Genova

The principal city of the Italian region of Liguria, Genoa has a population of 620,316 inhabitants (at December 2005). It was the birthplace of Americas founding father, Christopher Columbus, and the great virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini. Nowadays Genoa is a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis, undergoing great transformation in preparation for the challenges of the future: it is home to the second most important port, in the Mediterranean, handling over 1,600,000 containers every year. The historic centre of the city, with its characteristic winding streets, and parts of its port, have been transformed into an internationally famous tourist haven. The ancient wharf is now home to the largest Aquarium in Europe, welcoming a total of 1,300,000 visitors per year.
